Our Six Priorities

When we reviewed our corporate responsibility strategy, we consulted widely and we took a long hard look at our business. We concluded that there are six priority areas where we should take action.

Environment

Our business operations have an impact on the natural environment. We are committed to reducing the energy and water we use and creating less waste.

People

We run our own apprenticeship programme where our people can gain nationally recognised qualifications. We also help our people make a difference to the success of Good Together.

Sourcing

We have developed a Responsible Sourcing Policy to ensure our suppliers meet national and international human and labour rights standards.

Health

We are committed to providing our customers with healthy food options and information about the food we serve so they can choose what’s right for them.

Community investment

At Whitbread, we want to give something back. We help our people in raising money for WaterAid, the Costa Foundation and other charities they support.

Brand & customers

We are reviewing our Brand Standards, which cover how we interact with our guests, to see how we perform from a corporate responsibility perspective.

Food waste trial

We have been running a trial to collect food waste from a sample of our Support Centre and restaurant sites and send it to an anaerobic digestion plant.

Costa cows and milk bags

Changing over to using milk in bags rather than plastic containers means we make better coffee, produce far less waste and so save money.

Burgess Hill green hotel and low-carbon restaurant

Our Burgess Hill, West Sussex development is our first large-scale green hotel and our first low-carbon restaurant.
